Eligibility Requirements and Important Information

Social security cards for each person, picture I.D., electric bill, proof of any child support and proof of income. 1. Applicants receiving LIHEAP benefits must have income of no more than 150% of the Federal Poverty Level. This includes all income from employment and from benefits such as child support, SS/SSI/SSDI, TANF, etc. Placement within the Federal Poverty Level is calculated using information from the table below. For example, a family of four could have no more than $31,800 in earned or unearned income. Families can receive one Home Energy benefit and two Crisis benefits (one per season) per year. Heating season is from October 1-March 31, and cooling season is from April 1-September 30. A crisis is defined as no access or being in immediate danger of losing access to needed home energy. 3. Applicants for LIHEAP benefits must have at least one household member who is a citizen of the United States or be residing legally within the United States and be eligible for federal benefits. If anyone in the household is receiving food stamps or SSI, then the citizenship requirement is considered to have been met. 4. Households with family members who are elderly (over 60), disabled, or have young children under five are given priority status for receiving LIHEAP benefits.
