Program Description
PROGRAM METHODOLOGY:
BEFORE SCHOOL:
A day of learning begins when youth arrive at the center. The youth are greeted by staff and participate in one or more educationally stimulating activities including but not limited to math and literacy focused table games, puzzles, word searches, special interest clubs (chess, book) etc.
AFTER SCHOOL:
Participating youth are transported from various private and public school locations daily. Our commitment to academic success for all students ensures the first priority upon the youths arrival is homework assistance and completion. Ongoing communication between staff, parents and schools, help to identify academic strengths and weaknesses, and assures that each child is given individual assistance and tutoring referrals specific to their needs.
**Balanced Literacy and Reading Recovery Program:
To promote and foster good academic futures, UCCs Balanced Literacy and Reading Recovery Program is designed to reduce the number of students in Kindergarten through Third Grade who have extreme difficulty learning to read and write, and by targeting these grades will lessen the liklihood of unsuccessful academic experiences in subsequent grades. The program is a highly effective intervention of small group tutoring for low achieving Kindergarteners, and 1st Graders through 3rd Graders. The intervention is most effective when it is available to all students who need it and is used as a supplement to good classroom teaching.
Individual students receive a 1.5 hour session 2 times per week. Our Balanced Literacy and Reading Recovery Instructors are State Board of Education certified and employ many strategies in meeting the needs of your child.
As soon as the students can meet grade-level expectations and demonstrate that they can continue to work independently in the classroom , they are moved to another leveled reading group.
UCC has been successfully providing this program since the 2008-2009 school year and boasts a more than an 90% success rate and an average enrollment increase of 65% annually for the past 4 years.
** Homework Assistance:
UCCs homework assistance program supports students' homework completion by setting a predictable schedule for homework, establishing routines, and creating safe and productive spaces with easy access to materials.
The afterschool homework environment accommodates group collaborative study and individual one-on-one help. In a classroom setting, the space is arranged so that students with similar work can help each other with the guidance of a qualified facilitator. There is also a quiet area where students work on an individual basis. All students rotate between the classroom and quiet room to maximize their study experience.
Students work at their own pace. If they finish before the homework portion of the afterschool program is overor do not have homework on that particular daythey can move to another space and work on education-based games either individually or in groups or to another recreation space.
These structured practical education and additional recreational activities provide the youth with opportunities for skill and character development. All programs are open to boys and girls ages 5-17. Special Interest Area recreation activities include Graphic and Media Arts, Culinary Arts, Technology, Intramural Sports football, cheerleading, basketball, baseball and track and field. We also offer age appropriate classes in Youth Substance Abuse Prevention, Crime Prevention, Teenage Pregnancy Prevention and Future Forecasting: Careers and Entrepreneurships. In collaboration with other agencies we are able to enhance our core services to provide extra-curricular ventures such as, sports camps, field trips and cultural experience.
*The 13th AV Dream Center- Mustang Sports Academy offers organized youth sports in Football, Cheerleading, Soccer, Basketball, Baseball, Track & Field:
