Program Description

Play and Learning Strategies (PALS) is an early childhood, in-home, education program for parents with children ages 4 months to 4 years old. Trained PALS Coaches meet with parents and support them as their children's first, most powerful, and influential teacher. The PALS coaches provide a research-proven parenting program that supports early childhood development and help parents build the foundation for their children's future learning. PALS coaches help parents to support their children's social-emotional, cognitive, and language development skills which are essential to success in school and life. Completion of the PALS program results in a strengthened parent-child bond and a strong foundation of learning for the child which will prepare him/her for success in school and life. Research shows that learning begins long before a child enters kindergarten and children in families that have completed the PALS curriculum achieve higher motor skills, show greater cooperation in providing a response to parents' requests and achieve higher cognitive scores than children whose families did not complete the program. PALS services are available in English and Spanish.

KEY COMPONENTS INCLUDE: In-home early childhood education services conducted by trained and certified Play and Learning Strategies (PALS) coaches. The PALS infant curriculum includes weekly sessions related to early development and developmental screenings. The PALS toddler curriculum also includes developmental screenings and expands on the infant curriculum by adapting the early development topics for this age group. Additional sessions are also provided related to supporting the toddlers' increased independence and limit-testing behaviors. Key concepts include paying attention to and interpreting communicative signals; responding sensitively to signals; supporting learning by maintaining the child's interests; having realistic expectations for what children of different ages can do, and what are "normal" behaviors; stimulating language development through labeling objects and actions; and incorporating these strategies throughout the day and during routine activities.
